Big Plans

Someday I'm going to have an art gallery in my home for to the works of everyone from Monet to my own children.
Someday I'm going to read children's books by the fireplace with my husband when the kids are asleep.

Someday I'm going to know the Book of Mormon like the back of my hand.

Someday I'm going to adorn the kitchen table with vases of weeds picked lovingly by my children.

Someday I'm going to be the voice of a character in a Disney movie.

Someday I'm going to hold a bald eagle on my arm and observe its majesty up close and personal.

Someday I'm going to write and illustrate a children's book dedicated to my n&ns and my kids.

Someday I'm going to sing opera on the balcony of a castle somewhere in the green European countryside.

Someday I'm going to be at the wheel of a Mini Cooper, cruisin through town with the top down.

Someday I'm going to love folding and putting away laundry.

Someday I'm going to be obnoxiously busy and I'll drop everything to have a play day with my kids.

Someday I'm going to ride in a gondola in Venice with my husband.

Someday I'm going to shake Walt Disney's hand and thank him for making dreams come true (in heaven, that is).

Someday I'm going to conquer my fear of being in the ocean and go scuba diving.

Someday I'm going to draw a beautiful picture of the Savior.

Someday my kids are going to cry and I'm going to sing them the lullabies my mom sang to me.

Someday I'm going to shake the hand of the prophet.

Someday I'm going to be done with school and learn just because I'm curious.

Someday life is going to be amazing . . .

. . . Just like today!

I think I'll start by cleaning my room.

Dream big
& Love life

Deep Breaths

Today, I was lazy

And, I must say, I feel completely justified in it.

It's a uniquely satisfying way to spend Time,

When Time is feeling charitable and gives of itself freely:

A rare occurrence in the life of this college student.

The Time I know is most often greedy and frugal,

But at this time of year

He, like a Scrooge, is prodded to change

And change he does.

Change is a welcome guest.

Who doesn't like a little spare change?

And thus, Time allows the blessed opportunity to breathe.

It's a wonder that breathing is such a necessity,

You'd think we'd learn to make time for it more often.

I'm not talking about your ordinary "inhale exhale" business,

I'm talking about the deep, cleansing, drink of life

That not only fills your lungs, but fills your soul.

The breath that clears away the daunting, taunting lump

Lodged uncomfortably in your throat

Daring you, like the bully on the playground

To cry. To quit.

But you don't quit.

You breathe,

And for one more day you keep your lunch money:

Your pocketful of precious dignity,

And the bully backs down.

Keep breathing, friends,

I heard somewhere that it's good for you.

P.S. I was featured here a while back. You'll laugh.

Blast From The Past

Now you can see what I did for my brother's Christmas present this year,
an old school photo shoot of his cute kids:

Old School

Remember when I talked about doing "the coolest photo shoot ever"? It was my brother and sister-in-law's Christmas present, hence the secrecy. You know how I'm slightly obsessive about "old photos"...well, here's the obsession put to good use.

I want to do this for my own family someday, but since that's not going to be taking place any time soon, I thought I'd get some practice in. I took my brother's cute kids for an evening to have a slumber party (and party we did) then we did this awesome photo shoot the next morning:

We had a blast together
And my brother and sister-in-law love the gift...

...but not as much as I loved making the gift!

Oh, how I love Christmas!

Remember?

Today, I was talking to a man I work with about our holiday plans,
When he told me, "I just don't feel like Christmas this year."

That made me sad for him.

I think that slowly we're forgetting why we celebrate this holiday in the first place.
Sure, Santa Claus, the presents, parties and traditions are all a great bonus,
But frankly, The Grinch could take all of those things away if he wanted to.

Christmas will still come,

Just as the Messiah came as a baby in Bethlehem,
To redeem us, His brothers and sisters, from our transgressions
And pave the way to the eternities and life in the hereafter.

What a wonderful and perfect gift our Heavenly Father has given to us,
By lovingly sending His Only Begotten Son to the Earth to be our Savior and Redeemer.

Celebrate Christmas.

I'm a Princess

...and I've dated quite a few "frogs" in my time.

I even tried kissing one, but he didn't turn into a prince,

At least...not my prince.

I don't know how that fairy tale is supposed to work to tell you the truth, but I have a plan:

With my plastic tiara from junior year's Homecoming dance adorning my head,

A toy frog in my hand (just for fun),

And a gaggle of giddy giggling girls,

I am going to see this tomorrow night,

Then, at last I will know what I've been doing wrong.

Home SWEET Home

In my opinion,
graham cracker/gingerbread houses are to Christmas
as carving pumpkins are to Halloween
and dying eggs are to Easter...

...except way more delicious!

Yum!

Happy Holidaying to you all!

Happiness for Dummies

Blah!

That's the name of it, this mood I've been stuck in for the past couple of days. It's my least favorite mood of them all, and it's time to send it packing. So, say "arrivederci" cause it's going on a long vacation.

10 Steps to Finding Happiness (at least for me):
Step 1: Vent frustrations to a willing and loving family member or friend. Avoid name-calling or being overly-irate.

Step 2: Have a good cry into your pillow. Just let it all out (unless you have no real urge to do so).

Step 3: Pray. Explain frustrations, express desires, choose happiness now and humbly ask for help.

Step 4: Breath in deeply. Breath out slowly.

Step 5: Listen to this or this, or something equally calming and beautiful, in solitude.

Step 6: Do something nice for someone else. Anyone. It shouldn't be hard to find someone in need of assistance, love or friendship.

Step 7: Count your blessings*. Name them one by one. Write them down if that helps.

Step 8: Devote some time to playing with children. If you haven't felt an outpouring of happiness yet, this will fix that!

Step 9: Smile. Go forward, not backward*.

Step 10: Celebrate happiness. Dance. Sing. Live.

Be happy,
Life is too precious to spend being "blah"!

Slipping

I woke up this morning and looked out the window,

A thin blanket of fresh snow had fallen while I slept.

It was dark outside and difficult to pull myself from my warm blankets,

But eventually I found myself looking at my reflection in the bathroom mirror

Tiredly doing my hair and makeup for church, as if on auto-pilot.

I decided to leave 5 minutes earlier that usual,

On account of the sleet that was now pouring from the sky

Freezing itself unpleasantly to its fallen brother.

By the time I reached the freeway, that decision proved to be a good one.

If the weather wasn't enough of a contributor to the slow traffic, construction made up for it.

The heater began to thaw my fingers and toes

As I waited in a cattle-like herd of snow-covered cars exiting the freeway.

Eventually, I was making my way through my regular route to church.

Suddenly, down the hill I saw traffic cones positioned between the lanes

And crowds of people making their slippery way across the crosswalk toward the Conference Center:

The Sunday morning MoTab Christmas Concert.

In a desire to avoid the sluggish mass, I turned to make a detour.

I patted the dashboard of my Civic encouragingly as we began the precarious ascension up our ever-inclining path.

A minivan made its way toward me on the slippery, narrow road.

I stopped. And waited for it to pass.

When finally the road was clear of oncoming traffic, I pressed lightly on the gas to continue the climb,

The tires spun forward, but slipped helplessly on the icy road, despite my continual prodding of the pedal,

And I began to make my way back down the hill. Backwards.

Thankfully, the brake overcame the slick ice and obeyed the quick shove of my high-heeled foot.

I stopped.

Then, I attempted to prod the gas pedal once more, but backward, down the hill I slid.

People stared. People passed.

A swift Jeep with four-wheel drive inched by with detestable ease.

I prayed a small, desperate, but hopeful prayer for safety

As the sleet tapped the windshield and dripped down its glistening surface.

Then, I reversed

And I turned around,

This time going back down the hill on purpose. Grateful to be in control again...

No.

Grateful to be watched over and guided by He who has all control.

As much as I think I would like to avoid the "sluggish masses" that inevitably find their way into my life,

I am grateful for the guidance and perspective of a Father in Heaven who willingly guides my course,

Who catches me when I slip.

I have never regretted following Him, even when it's hard or when I'm feeling impatient,

Because the blessings He lovingly bestows always far outweigh the struggles and the disappointment.

Drive safely, everybody!

#24

Do you want to know what the best part of my life is, thus far...

The part that fills my heart with love and my eyes with tears of joy...

The part that teaches me more about life than any college professor...

The part that solidifies my desire to be a mom every day...

It's being an Aunt.
Aunt Widsy. Aunt Hee-hee. Aunt Dzee-dzee. Aunt Poops (don't ask).

I may be biased, but I'm pretty sure my n&ns are the coolest:
#1 - Bobs was born when I was 6 and is basically my sweet little sister.
Quote: "Frankly, I don't wear a bikini."

#2 - Michael beats me at arm wrestling and has sweet skate moves.
Quote: (to his preschool teacher) "What're you lookin' at, ya hockey puck?"

#3 - Whittles always has cool things to show me and makes me laugh.
Quote: "That is so delinquently choice."

#7 - Spence is a handsome little gentleman and an impressive athlete.
Memory: Playing basketball one-on-one with him in the driveway and getting schooled.
#8 - Jaker is a sponge of knowledge in everything from animals to Star Wars.
Quote: (explaining a Christmas present) "I received a Star Wars product."
#9 - Hai is thoughtful, creative and really good at UNO.
Memory: When she gets really into telling a story, starts talking super fast and only takes quick gasps of air between phrases.
#10 - Ether is sweet and never forgets to give hugs and kisses to everyone.
Memory: "I beasty!" (I'm thirsty)

#11 - Ammon-M loves to make people laugh, especially babies, and is a great artist.
Quote: "Joseph Smith was lucky...Heavenly Father told him he didn't have to go to any church..."
#12 - Johnny is always smiling and sharing his latest jokes and songs.
Quote: (to my sister when her date came over) "HEA-THER! Your BOY-FRIEND'S here!"

#14 - Matthew is great at soccer and has a contagious laugh.
Quote: "Dad said....."Poops" (laughs)"
#15 - Binny always gives me big hugs and sweet notes/drawings.
Quote: (when the toilet paper was all gone) "The toilet paper runned out of batteries."

#16 - Sadster spreads enthusiasm and loves doing girly things.
Quote: "I wuv Watatouille in the wuwst way" (I love Ratatouille in the worst way).

#17 - Sarah makes funny faces with me and loves to play with me on Barbie.com.
Memory: Taking her picture. She is a natural at posing, smiling and making faces.
#18 - Smyler is a sweetie and loves to share his stories.
Quote: "Dzee-dzee, Neeny eet me!" (Lindsay, Ninny hit me!)

#19 - Smylee is fearless and loves princess things.
Quote: (after putting on hand santitizer) "I just...I just want to suck on my thumb, but it tastes yucky..."

#20 - Nater has an adult-like personality and always makes me laugh.
Quote: "Knock knock {who's there} a monkey {a monkey who?} a monkey's head (laughs)! Get it?"
#21 - Benj always says funny things and doesn't realize it till everyone laughs.
Quote: "Dat me, dat fweak me out!" (If that were me, that'd freak me out!)

#22 - Lyni has the most beautiful long eyelashes and is basically just adorable.
Memory: Scowling when she's feeling shy and feebly attempting to hide her smile.

#23 - Hy Guy thinks I'm funny and plays Hide & Seek with me none-stop.
Quote: "Widsy...Iss...My...Fave-ut...An...(claps)" (Lindsay is my favorite Aunt).
#24 - Bebe is adorable and has sweet witto chunky cheeks.
Memory: Holding her for the first time and stroking her fuzzy witto head.

I love those kids! And quite honestly, if being an aunt is this amazing,
I can only imagine what beautiful blessings await me in motherhood someday.

Welcome to our family, Bebe!

P.S. I totally called this! Go Danny!

The Problem with Yo-Yo's

The weekend was 99.95% amazing!

0.05% of it was lame and probably unavoidable,
but I don't have much more to say than that,
so I'll share this quote I found that made me laugh.

“Remember, people will judge you by your actions, not your intentions.
You may have a heart of gold -- but so does a hard-boiled egg.”
~unknown~

Let's just say, dating is like a yo-yo,
And sometimes I think mine is broken,
Cause it seems to spend a lot more time going down,
Than it does in coming back up.

I'm grateful for my relationship with my Heavenly Father,
For the beautiful truth that He knows the intent of my heart.
And when I turn to Him in prayer, He lovingly and willingly guides my life.

I'm grateful for the 99.95% of my weekend
that I spent with loving family and friends.
The part that leaves my heart full and happy!

...to being done with this everlasting semester!

*click*

I am stoked for this weekend,
So stoked, in fact, that I forgot how much I hate using the word "stoked"!

That's pretty darn stoked!
(ok, I'll stop now)

Why you ask?
I have many reasons!

Reason #1:
I will be officially done with final projects!
Yeeeyaaah!

Reason Letter B:
I get to see these long lost lovelies
we're going to see these on a group date!
(that's more like 3 reasons in 1)

Reason III:
I'm having an Aunt Date with my brother's kidlets!
I dare say playing with my n&ns is my favorite pastime ever!
(Pampering and spoiling them to no end is part of that)
:)

Reason Numero Cuatro:
My nephew Ammon is getting baptized!
I'm so proud of him!

Reason 文字 E:
(drum roll please)
I will be doing the
coolest photo shoot ever!
I wish I could tell you more, but it's a surprise! Shhhh...

I'll post the fabulous photos later this month!

*phew*

It's going to be an awesome weekend!

I know it's only Wednesday,
but it's always nice to have something to look forward to!

Happy Wednesday, y'alls! xoxo
