True Happiness...

...knows no pride.

...is a drop in a pool and each resulting ripple.

...is your heart's way of smiling.

...comes when charity calls.

...is water through the fingers of those who seek to keep it for themselves.

...is gratitude to God.

...is not the destination, but is accumulated in each step of the journey.

...often reveals itself in the form of chocolate.

...is rooted in action, not stagnancy.

...can only be seen with open eyes,
can only be heard with open ears,
can only be felt with an open heart.

...is the genius of little children.

(my nieces on a ride at Lagoon on Monday)

Are you happy?

The Day of Christmas

Twas the day of Christmas and all through the house
Every creature was stirring, including my computer mouse
Three stockings were hung by the chimney with care
Where used to hang nine, so it was looking quite bare
And I in my new jammies was stuffed to the brim
So Dad and I were working it off by belting a hymn
We attempted pirouettes like Nutcracker ballerinas
But just broke out in laughter like a bunch of hyenas
Madre was bustling about in the kitchen
As my new hard drive was loading (the one for which I'd been itchin')
The family was due any moment at the door
My siblings and their spouses and their kids whom I adore
So here I am, preparing for fun
Gonna live up the day, cause I'll be sad when it's done
Just wanted to drop in for a moment and say

I hope y'all have a very Merry Christmas Day!

White Christmas

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
But all I’ve got is lots of rain.
I miss the snowflakes falling
But I don’t miss my brakes stalling
Yet for a white day I won’t complain.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every sweater that I’ve got.
So, may some snowfall clear up this haze
And may all your final grades be A’s.

A Norah Night

A breeze rustles the low hanging branches of our weeping birch tree and scatters the lemon-lime leaves into brilliant dance, like children dizzily spinning in the yard.

The dark billowing clouds slink murkily beside the golden sun as it sinks softly, wearily behind the mountains and kisses the sky goodnight. She blushes pink.

The frosty wind pulls a shady blanket across the sky, over my house. A storm whirls above like a dazzling dream and lightening flashes behind a mysterious curtain.

I bundle - Robe, slippers, down comforter, and a blanket scattered with friendly ghosts. Cold from the inside out, my body aches for the Florida sun. For relief.

Defying the unwritten laws of illness, my immune system gives way to the bitter cold of an approaching visitor - Winter with her infamous reputation for sticking around like a lingering ex-someone.

Insides give up all too soon. Influenza, for the second time in three weeks.
Not the first time he's tortured me like this, but hoping it's the last.

Longing for sleep from the inside out, I sit and stare at the blaring screen. Projects dance around my head like a gang of mocking bullies, blowing raspberries and singing that familiar "nanner nanner" jingle.

I retreat to my cyber sanctuary of Bloggersville and huddle beneath it's whimsical webpages, scintillating sidebars and varied visitors.

If my body can't rest, my mind can. At least for a moment.

A healing breath fills my lungs with the scent of pumpkin spice and dinner cooking.
In a brief moment of pity, Life presses the pause button...

...and Norah sings.

Won't Accept Defeat

The day was rosy, the sun shone bright

The princess frolicked with delight

Her dreams, it seemed, had at last come true

She basked, like a cloud in the sky of blue

But all too soon a dragon came

Her happiness he sought to claim

She whimpered from her palace perch

And in her heart, began a search

For the deeper strength somewhere inside

Her cowering cowardice to subside

. . .

to be continued

Sunday Poem

Love is like the Sun -

Warmth and light, often blinding,

a peaceful, joyful fresh reminding

that each new day, our loving Savior,

allows us to change our behavior.

And in His love that never sets,

let us live with no regrets.

~short poem by me~

Happy Sunday!

Memo To Me

Dear Future Me,

I dream of you most every day

And wonder who you are

Sometimes you are an opera diva

Touring near and far

Or animating characters

for Disney and Pixar

Sometimes you're writing children's books

Complete with illustrations

Or painting art for galleries

Crowds awed by your creations

Or a world-traveling photographer

Capturing exotic destinations

But mostly, when I dream of you

The you I see the most

Is no world-renown culinary chef

With restaurants on the coast

Or celebrity signing photographs

Or accepting another toast

You're singing to a crying child,

No crowd of gallant fans,

And your most beloved masterpiece

Was drawn with broken crayons.

Do not be dashed by "lack of fame",

The world is in your hands.

Deep Breaths

Today, I was lazy

And, I must say, I feel completely justified in it.

It's a uniquely satisfying way to spend Time,

When Time is feeling charitable and gives of itself freely:

A rare occurrence in the life of this college student.

The Time I know is most often greedy and frugal,

But at this time of year

He, like a Scrooge, is prodded to change

And change he does.

Change is a welcome guest.

Who doesn't like a little spare change?

And thus, Time allows the blessed opportunity to breathe.

It's a wonder that breathing is such a necessity,

You'd think we'd learn to make time for it more often.

I'm not talking about your ordinary "inhale exhale" business,

I'm talking about the deep, cleansing, drink of life

That not only fills your lungs, but fills your soul.

The breath that clears away the daunting, taunting lump

Lodged uncomfortably in your throat

Daring you, like the bully on the playground

To cry. To quit.

But you don't quit.

You breathe,

And for one more day you keep your lunch money:

Your pocketful of precious dignity,

And the bully backs down.

Keep breathing, friends,

I heard somewhere that it's good for you.

P.S. I was featured here a while back. You'll laugh.

What Matters Most

I walked the week's path and when I came to the end
I looked back to review its long course
But when I saw I'd tread only very few steps
I heaved a great sigh of remorse.

There are weeks that I've run with hardly a rest
And days that I've sat to the side,
And yet those few steps that I'd marked in the dirt
Seemed to snuff out my credible pride.

So there, 'neath the trees, determined to pout
Discouraged and ready to quit
I knelt in the brush, tears stinging my eyes
Till a voice whispered, "You can do it."

And out from the trees came a brilliant man
Full of love, gleaming smile on his face
And he stretched forth his hand, and he lifted me up
And he healed me with his warm embrace

This is why I love Sundays. It's as if the Savior himself, with his abundant love, fills me from head-to-toe with determination and a new sense of purpose to get me through another week. He knows our potential is great and he is always willing to remind us, but we cannot do it without him. I love him for his patience, his trust and his love.

This week I will do better, for him.

black, white & grey

pushing to the front of the line
floating to the top of the pile
like a forgotten ghost
but more like an angel
playing like an old movie reel

black and white
cue laughter, cue happiness
plunging into the pensive of artificial reality
play, rewind, play again
cue dancing, cue rain
cue director
why did he say "cut"?
rewind, play again
decoding dreams
smiling then crying
almost tangible
push play
then pause
breathe in deep
real deep
courage
push forward impatiently
static
cue faith
adjusting, growing
learning to be lindsay
not simply existing

dreaming will never quench a thirst for life
like living will

Merrrrr =

Some call it poetry
I call it random stream of thought
aka T.O.L. = Thinking Out Loud

Relaxed. Breathing deeply. Thinking: work tomorrow. Early morning.
Missing: midnight ventilations. Pulling stuffing from my favorite pillow.
Smiling. Infinite memories. "The World!"
Heart beats: best best. Deep sigh...
..."Awesome"

New week: Monday.
New month: July.
Change and more of the same.
A mysterious horizon.

Count blessings.
Hope. Trust. Faith.
Smile: inside first, then out.

Daddy's Day!

This is my:
life coach, teacher, personal trainer,
provider, comedian, clogged-sink-drainer,
food critic, front-&-center-audience member,
cheerleader, fire builder in December,
spider smasher, complimenter, body guard,
"you can do it" when things are hard,
dance partner, vocal partner, money lender,
hug giver, story teller, vacation spender,
walking partner, landlord, wearer of plaid,
wrong-righter, best friend, oh and...Dad.
~me~

This is my dad when he was a little. Adorable is in the genes :)

{Top: Stephen (dad), Tad, Jerry - Bottom: Grandma Julia Fern, Paul (on lap), Christine, Grandpa Milton, Anne}

I get my love for singing from my dad and everyone tells me I look like my mom. What a compliment! I love old pictures like this. Aren't my parents cute?

What a trooper. This is way before I was born (youngest of 9 and all), but he still did this when I was little. My favorite was when he'd clear away the kitchen table and chairs and we'd dance to "Boston Pops Hoe Down" or "The King & I" laughing all the while.
{Top: Pete, Jason, Steve - Bottom: Dad}

I have to thank my dad for his love for traveling. We have gone on some great family vacations. The best part of these vacations, however, is not the sights we see but the memories we make as a family. That is what I love most!
{Me and Dad at Disneyland}

Check out our big matching glasses. This makes me smile!

These are my dad's parents: Milton and Julia Fern.
They sure raised a rascal of a boy into a great man.

This is our family wallyball tournament.
My dad has a great sense of humor. We share corny jokes and laugh for hours!
{Top: Dad - Bottom: Me, Madre, and Heather}

My dad has always been a great example to me of what to look for in my future husband. He is always sweet and loving to my mom and I appreciate that. There is a great comfort in knowing that your parents not only care for you, but care for one another.

Dad, thank you for always putting your family first and providing for and loving us.
I have always looked up to you as one of my greatest examples, mentors, and friends!

I love you, Daddy!
