Festive Flicks

My family is a movie family. I attribute it to the fact that, raising 9 children, my parent's loved having something inexpensive and fun that we could all do together.

Thus, every year after Thanksgiving we start our tradition of watching one or two Christmas movies per week up until Christmas. It's probably one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Reading Christmas books is another. It's great to see all the different portrayals of the way the Christmas season changes lives for the better. Truly, that is the common theme in all of the movies that we watch:

Changing unbelief to knowledge and "Bah humbug" to "God bless us." Changing worthlessness to value and broken to whole.

How fitting that the season that celebrates the birth of Christ, by whom we can all be made better, is full of such beautiful stories where this tender transformation takes place. How blessed we are to have a Savior born for us!

So, I decided to share some of my favorite moments (and actors) from my favorite Christmas movies:

The 1994 version of "Miracle on 34th Street": Ah, Richard Attenborough! There has never been a greater Santa Clause...aside from, I imagine, the real one. And, of course, Mara Wilson was probably the cutest little girl ever in her time. What can I say, this whole cast knocks my socks off. What a beautiful movie. If you haven't seen it, you must! It's probably my second favorite Christmas movie ever!

Next, Jim Henson's "The Muppet Christmas Carol": I'd imagine that if you haven't seen this, you're thinking, "Psh, what? Some kid movie?" Uh, no. This is the best version of this story I've ever seen...and I think I've seen about 4 or 5, not including plays. Michael Caine? How can you find a better Scrooge? And I like this music better than the original Christmas Carol. So...watch this one, too, k?

*sigh* I'll bet you were waiting for this one, huh? "It's A Wonderful Life": For those of you who haven't seen this, don't let the fact that "it's old" deter you. It is my all time favorite Christmas movie and has the most wonderful characters and storyline ever. If you don't watch any others, watch this one. It's wonderful :)

And last the best of all the game, this is Dad's favorite movie of all time, "Ben Hur": And this clip is my favorite portrayal of Christ's birth...probably because of the glorious soundtrack behind it, but also cause it's just beautiful.

My goodness, I just love this time of year!
Merry Christmas time, friends! :D

Gosh, Linds... stop making me cry! Miracle on 34th Street and It's A Wonderful Life are my top too as well! (In fact, I already Netflixed it so we can watch it on Christmas :) )

And for a piece of useless information... The Sesame Street Bert and Ernie had their names taken from this movie :)

A Muppet's Christmas Carol + It's A Wonderful Life are my favorites too, along with White Christmas. If you haven't seen that one, I highly recommend it. :)
