Becoming Superwoman

Sometimes I fool myself into thinking that I have super powers.
That I, Lindsay Kay, can take on the cares of the world single-handedly.

Truth be told, sometimes, I think I'm Superwoman.

Well, let me tell you that if I had a dime for every time I've realized that I'm not Superwoman, I would, at least, be a Super RICH Woman ;)

I'm pretty sure no matter how fast I run from sun-up to sun-down, I can't possibly do everything I need, want and even don't want to get done.

It's all about priorities and organization and time-management and getting enough sleep and maintaining good health and delegating, etc. Right? Ok, so...where do you find the time to do all THOSE things on top of everything else?

"A step at a time...a day at a time," James says.

I dream big. It's my blessing and my curse. Sometimes I dream up things that are way bigger than I have the means or time to make possible. Thus, my dream list is long...but, so is my stride - rooted in determination.

But no, I am not Superwoman, though, at times I'm almost positive that I'm marrying Superman himself. James truly is my hero. What I did to deserve such a great blessing, I may never know, which is fine. Why question a good thing? ;)

Ya know? Sometimes I find it unfathomable that James could think as highly of me as I do of him. In fact, last week he took me to the BYU Homecoming Spectacular (which truly was spectacular) starring BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL as an early b-day present and Brian, whom we both love, sang a song I'd never heard before, but immediately related to:

Yep, that's SO James. Truly, the potential that he sees in me makes me want to be better for him, makes me try to be the person he describes when he compliments me. She sounds pretty fantastic ;) Well, tonight James was no different. My stress levels could've carried me to Pluto on a cloud of steam or a stream of teary frustration, and oh...that boy, he is the world to me and I don't know what I'd do without him. He straightens me out when my thoughts are crooked and lifts me up when the weight of life tends to accentuate my weaknesses.

Yes, he simply amazes me.

And, yet, I must say, as amazing as my James is, there is only one for whom and by whom I know that I can be made "super", unbroken, stronger than I often feel, healed and at peace - He is our Savior, Jesus Christ. By Him, I truly "stand all amazed." I will never be made a "super woman" by my own strength and good intentions, but through the infinitely loving Atonement of our Savior...it is possible.

For now, that's all I need to know.

I don't need to fly at lightening speed or carry the world on my back, I simply need to kneel in prayer and faithfully seek guidance and strength, then stand and...take one step at a time...one day at a time.

Starting now.
Good night!

I Smile

My friend Liz shared this song with me a couple of months ago and, I must confess, I simply love it. It has quickly made its way onto my "Top 25 Most Played Songs" list on myPod.

I got the feeling that some of you might enjoy it, too!

Don't give up, friends.
You look so much better when you smile!

Heartstrings of the Week: Because, I Love Her

I. Love. Barbra.

That's pretty much all there is to it.

However, I probably should also mention that I VERY much adore this song, too! I mean, it's called "People!" What's not to love? Listen to the words. It's so great!

 My goodness, woman!

Yeah, I must warn you though...the movie this song is from, "Funny Girl", is...strange.
Well, it's good, like, it has it's moments...but it's mostly strange.

However, if you haven't seen "What's Up, Doc?" with Barbra and Ryan O'Neal and Madeline Kahn...This needs to be amended pronto. You'll thank me!

Here are some of my favorite quotes...which may or may not make sense.

- - -

Howard: "I am not repeating myself. I am not repeating myself..."

Howard: "How...? How...?"
Judy: "How-ward! Howard. We've almost got that stutter fixed."
Howard: "You...? You...?"
Judy: "Eu-nice! Eunice."

Hugh: "I am Hugh."
Judge: "You are me?"
Hugh: "No, I am Hugh."
Judge: "Stop saying that. Make him stop saying that!"

Judy: "Howard Bannister...as in sliding down the..."

Eunice: "As the years go by, romance fades
and something else takes its place.
Do you know what that is?"
Howard: "Senility?"
Eunice: "Trust!"
Howard: "That's what I meant."

Howard: "Is that clear?
Judge: "No, but it's consistent."

Delivery Boy: "They stole my bike!"
Judge: "That's grand theft auto."
Eunice: "They tried to molest me."
Judge: "That's...[looks at Eunice]...unbelievable."

- - -

Yeah, I could pretty much quote that whole movie.
SO FUNNY!

Anyway...

Over and out!

Heartstrings of the Week: If I Played Guitar

I'd play these:

1st - Stanley Myers' "Cavatina"

This is my favorite classical guitar solo. I don't know how many classical guitar songs there are out there, but of the ones I've heard this one is my favorite :)
Isn't it pretty? It sounds like a lullaby or a good option for a modern dance number. Somebody tell me, is he playing this whole thing? I really can't tell. It sounds like two guitars to me, but no matter how much I watch his fingers I still can't figure out what he's doing...

2nd - Mason Williams' "Classical Gas"

Weird name? Yeah, sure. BUT, I have loved this song for YEARS. It's on my parent's Hit Songs of the 60's & 70's album and I've been listening to it since I was at least 11. In fact, my friends and I used it as soundtrack music for several of our childhood L.A.M.P. (Lindsay, Amy & Morgan Productions) videos. Good times!

3rd - Michael J. Fox's version of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode"

First of all, if you haven't seen "Back to the Future" you are officially missing out on life and should remedy this immediately! ;) When I was little, this was my favorite scene of the whole move. Well, this and the skateboard chase scene. And the one in the diner where George says, "You're my density...I mean, my destiny." Let's face it, the whole movie is a classic! This video isn't the greatest quality, but you get the idea! :) Enjoy!

4th - Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"

One of my all time favorite songs...minus the depressing verse about mama's murderous rampage. I sang this in choir as a performance with some of my friends in high school. It was AWESOME! Warning: this is one of the strangest music videos in existence. I had no idea how truly unusual Queen was.
Gotta love their music though, eh?

(For guitar solos, forward to 2:41 AND 4:10)

5th - August Rush's "Dueling Guitars".

Also an awesome movie! I can't watch this movie without crying. BAH! I love music...and I would not mind playing guitar with Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Pssst, apart from being molto attractivo, he's got an Irish accent! ;) But seriously, there are so many ways to play the guitar, it's like a magical instrument of awesomeness!

6th - Rodrigo y Gabriela's "Diablo Rojo"

My brother Steve has a great taste in music. He showed us some clips of this group after FHE one night. Basically every song they play is this amazing!

Go ahead and watch, you'll see what I mean:

So.
Who wants to teach me guitar?

Heartstrings of the Week: High-Pitched Hip Hop

*PPP = Pinky Promise Project for more PPP posts go HERE

Ok.

So...I don't know how y'all feel about the new chipmunk movies. I saw the first one and it was ok. Kinda meh. My n&ns love 'em!

HOWEVER! The Chipmunks music has always been something near and dear to my heart since my childhood days of watching The Chipmunks cartoon (or as I called it "The Chickmunks"). Those were good times. My favorite episodes were the ones with The Chipettes. My older sisters always got to be Brittany & Eleanor and I was stuck being Jeanette. Lame.

My friend Jalene & I even busted out a sweet chipmunk album of our own via my karaoke machine when we were in high school. One of our songs is still the ringtone on my phone. Haha! Good times.

So, I'd like to introduce you to a song that my cousin Emily referred me to for my workout playlist: "We're The Chipmunks" the remix from their latest movie!

This video has the old 80's version and new hip hop version, but if you just want to hear the new one, which truly is THE BEST CYCLING/DANCE SONG on my "IT BURNS!!!" playlist then...

...forward to 1:25 in the video below.

P.S. Turn up the volume and get ready to rock out!
You won't be able to hold still.

WHOOP! WHOOP!
This song has inspired many a dance party in my kitchen while making dinner.

So, here's a little PPP challenge for y'all - Get moving!!

How many Pinky Promise Project participants do we have on board?
Please, check the "I'm Too Lazy To Write About How Much I Like This ;)" box below if you are! Together we can reach our fitness goals!

We've got fun things comin' up
Including the BEST healthy recipe I've ever had:
"Sweet Potato & Black Bean Fajitas"

Be excited. Be VERY excited!

Heartstrings of the Week: Sing Me To Heaven

My grandpa sent this to my mom today and I watched it over her shoulder and cried at how beautiful and powerful her voice is. This is Rhema Marvanne, she's a 7 year-old gospel singer. Her mom was a gospel singer as well, but passed away 2 years ago from a bout with cancer. I think that thought made this video particularly touching. What a sweet gift from God! I bought this song on iTunes, because cello it's amazing, but watching her perform it makes it 10 times more enjoyable...just as is the case with everything else musical. Enjoy!

Wow!

That's All

Alright, I'm going to bed after this one. I'm feeling very "night owl" tonight for some reason...Lucky you! ;) jk

1. Put your iPod or any music player on shuffle.
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. YOU MUST WRITE THAT SONG NAME DOWN NO MATTER HOW SILLY IT SOUNDS!
4. Copy and paste, then send this to all the friends you think might enjoy it!

What is your motto? Lonestar
Aw…dang it.
What do your friends think of you? More Than Words
How sweet!
What do you think about very often? Stormy Weather
Haha, true. I can’t help but love it.

Fitting.

My niece just did this on her blog and I laughed pretty hard. She had a hilarious list. My favorites on her list were:

Heartstrings of the Week: A League of Their Own

I could think of so many displeasing words for the male gender right now...but instead, I think I'll share a song...because I KNOW there are those gentlemen out there who actually think thoughts like this...and I'm holding out for one o' them:

(this video is lame, but it's the best one I could find that didn't have bikini-clad women in it, which ruins the cuteness of this song if you ask me... So...)

Ah. Feeling much better.
My apologies to those of my male friends who took the time to read this and are now potentially feeling bad about themselves. You know I love y'all.

Wahoo for dating! "It's de best. I luf eet." Name that movie!

Yeah, I think it's time for a chick flick with the Madre.
Any recommendations?

Hallelujah!

I'm seriously considering busting out a little o' dis right now:

{Brief sidenote: Quite honestly, that is the most beautiful thing ever! To see a bunch of strangers in a shopping mall, possibly having forgotten a bit of the true reason we celebrate the holiday, suddenly unite in praises to Christ the Lord. I love when the song starts playing and people stand up. Did you know that's what you're supposed to do for that song? It's like putting your hand over your heart for the National Anthem...but, arguably, more reverent....because, as you may have heard, this is a song of praise to the King of Kings. This song has always been my favorite part of musical Christmas. Handel was most definitely inspired.}

I can see it now.
7:31 AM
Quiet library.
Students studying for finals.

"HAL-LELU-JAH! HAL-LELU-JAH!..."

That would be AWESOME, right?
Anywho, as you may have guessed from my random inclination to sing the most jubilant song ever...

I'M DONE WITH FINAL PROJECTS!

So...excuse me while I

"HAAAAAAAAAAL-LELU-JAH!"

I Will Suhvive

Yep yep!
Gloria and I are pulling an all-nighter...

...spandex, sequins, roller skates and all

(seriously, who is that lady? And what is she doing?)

I love sleep :( This might be tricky...

Do you think I'll crumble?
Do you think I'll lay down and die?
...It might take all the strength I have not to fall apart, but I'm pretty sure...

I WILL SUHVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Heartstrings of the Week: I'm Not a 'Soul'dier

I'd like to share with you my favorite scene and song from Sister Act II. If you don't want to watch the whole thing, just forward to the part when they sing together toward the end. My brother John shared this with me a couple of years ago and I never cease to get the chills. If this doesn't give you chills, then you better get your chill-o-meter examined. John and I try to sing this like them, but who are we kidding?

Yeah, seriously! Don't stop.
Dang, girl! She does those runs like they're nothing!

BAH! I love soul music!
This song is definitely one of the favorites in my "Mmmhhmm" Mix on my iPod :)

For the full version, go HERE
(for some reason I like the movie clip better than the recording)

Heartstrings of the Week: Delightfully Dissonant

You might be upset that I've started to introduce Christmas tunes to you in November, but I can't help it. Christmas is my favorite holiday and it never stays long enough, so I like to "stretch" it out a bit. I don't want to get into the ethics of this topic too much, but let me just justify my reasoning real quick:

If Thanksgiving had a sibling, it'd be Christmas. Am I right? I can't think of a more relatable holiday. And so, because Thanksgiving doesn't have it's own music, what better kind of music to listen to than the Christmas kind. Besides, Christmas music is truly the most "thanksgiving" kind of music I know. There. I'm done now.

So, "Lux Aurumque" - I first heard this song performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in a past Christmas Concert with the talented Norwegian soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø (and no, I do not know how to pronounce her last name). You probably know her voice best from this (I apologize in advance for the corny captions).

Anyway, it was one of those songs that nearly pushed me off the edge of my seat, I was listening so intently. For some reason I am drawn to the complex beauty of these crazy dissonant chords and I love the tranquil resolved chords at the end. This dissonant-to-resolved kind of composition style just, GAH, kills me. Plus, seeing as the song is about the Savior's birth, I found it to be very symbolic...as this wonderful blessing resolves so much dissonance in my life every single day.

Ah. Yes, this is one of those "meditation" type songs... So, if you want the full effect, I recommend that you take a second, close your eyes, and just listen.

LUX AURUMQUE
Latin Translation ©2001 by Charles Anthony Silvestri
(English poem by Edward Esch)

Light,
warm and heavy,
as pure gold,
and the angels sing softly
to the newborn babe.

*sigh*
So beautiful.

Because our Savior, The Prince of Peace, was born to fulfill the plan of our Heavenly Father, we can enjoy peace and tranquility each day through His Atoning sacrifice.

That is what this song means to me.
Happy Holidays!
