Our Photographer

As Rick Steves said,
“I shutter to think how many people are underexposed
and lacking depth in this field.”

Ok, not only is one of the most cleverly awesome quotes I've ever heard ;) but I must also agree with it 100%! These days it's ridiculously easy to claim the title of "photographer." I don't mean any disrespect by that, but truly, one would hope that a nice camera wouldn't be the only qualification for starting a business...and yet, for some, it is.

Maybe it's just me and my ultra-nitpicky-aesthetic-visionary approach to wedding planning (and design/art in general), but James and I feel so blessed to have our friend, Jalene Taylor, capturing this fabulous time in our lives! She is the embodiment of a professional and an artist and is so passionate with her craft. I've always admired Jalene's love for photography, her attention to detail, her eye for composition and, all around, her ability to freeze beautiful moments in time, to be remembered and cherished for years.

“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like,
it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.”
~Paul Caponigro~

Thank you, Jalene, for sharing your beautiful talents with us!

Beware the Dessert Cart (not a PPP post)

Confession:

I'd MUCH rather have one GREAT option and one HORRIBLE option to choose from than a lot of good little options to decipher between.

Does that make sense?

I'm much better at seeing the difference between black and white than I am at seeing the difference between grey and charcoal and light grey and the color of concrete, etc.

See what I'm saying?

It's like, someone brings out a dessert tray with a piece of raspberry cheesecake, a hot fudge sundae brownie, a piece of funfetti cake, and some sort of decadent pie that you also happen to be in love with.

Do you base this decision off of what you're in the mood for? Biggest piece? Calories? What?

They're all equally as delicious (to me anyway)

And how long beforehand do you make this decision? Like did you go to this particular restaurant JUST for their desserts? Did you just glance at the menu as you were seated? Or did you think to yourself, "I'm so used to being SO full that I rarely even consider dessert"?

That's me. Family, school (namely graduation), calling, internship, work, personal goals (fitness & spiritual). Full! Like, I can't even remember the last time I considered getting "dessert". I've always just been too full...

So, now this feast of 18 years is about to come to an end and suddenly there's the dessert cart looming in the distance...full of so many great options and I'm thinking, "AGGGGHHHH!" cause I'm pretty sure that this is one of the hardest decisions that's ever come to the table.

No, contrary to my strange choice of examples, this isn't about food. It's about my life! Like, the determining factor of where I'll be and who I'll meet and what I'll learn, etc.

Unfortunately this isn't just one of those Girls Nights Out where I usually pawn off my lack-of-decision-making-capabilities on someone who is more opinionated when questions comes up like: "Who wants to drive?" "Where should we eat?" "What should we watch?"

Nope, this is me.
Just me.
Lindsay time.
Me, myself and I.

You can call me melodramatic or crazy or worrisome or whatever (though doing so wouldn't help me out much, because frankly, I already know these things), but my goodness, I'd like to FINALLY have a response besides,

"ErrmmmIdunno..." to the perpetual question,

"What are your plans after you graduate?"

*sigh*

Who knew freedom would be so much work? C'mon, I know that a lot of you have been in this same place recently, if not currently. Any personal stories or post-graduation-tips-for-dummies are welcome.

...annnnd scene.

Show Me Some Love

I'm goin' weekending now,
Which basically means I'm going to get stuff done that doesn't involve the computer...
I hope, I hope. No offense, but my eyes need a breather. And my brain.

...and my readers, no?

But no break for you. Not yet anyway. Know why? Cause you guys should comment! Now I know that it's not humanly possible for anyone to be on the computer as much as or more than me...because unfortunately my job, my schooling, my calling and the like are computer-based-ish. Mwer mwer. But would it hurt to at least say, "Hi, girl! I was here! My name's such-and-such!" I'll return the favor, mmmk? Deal?

Oooh, question!
Have y'all noticed my new little comment button in the sidebar -->
Now WHY oh WHY would I put that there? Hmmm....

I love y'all, you know I do, but what's the point of having a public blog if my public (psst, that's my bold way of saying "you guys") are privately reading? I mostly just love to hear what you have to say, mmk? Share the love.

Thanks to all those who do already! I'm basking in the love of it!

Have the BEST weekend of your ENTIRE lives, mmk?
Love y'all.
xoxoxo

P.S. Will I have some NEWS for YOU tomorrow!!! That is not a question. Stay tuned.

Talented Friends

This weekend my friend Kristin asked if she could shoot me...

...like with her camera, guys, c'mon. I said "friend" ;)

“PsshhhYEAH!” was pretty much my response.

And I think you can see why.

I think you should go visit my talented friend Kristin Brown
and have her take YOUR picture. Mmmk?

Thanks, Kristin! :D

Thank-Full

I saw this video and it reminded me of my motto, aka the title of this blog:

Life is Beautiful.

3 words that encompass what I strive for each day - remembering to see the beauty in life, cause it's always there if we take the time to look for it. That sounds corny, but it's my survival mechanism. I'm serious.

In fact, I've noticed one way that has helped me maintain this attitude - carrying a camera with me everywhere. Maybe as an artist, the ability to "see beauty" comes more naturally, I don't know, but I do know that taking the time to notice the beautiful things that Heavenly Father has created all around me brings substance to my life on days that would otherwise feel empty.

The phrase "Life is Beautiful" isn't just a frilly statement or the title of an amazing movie, it is a belief that is embedded in my heart each time I count a new blessing and witness the hand of God in my life. A personal testimony that He loves me.

You know? I am simply thankful to be happy.

That makes all the difference in every second of my day-to-day life.
What makes me happy? Well, that is a thankful list that I could write an entire series of books on, I'm sure of it! But here are a few, because I'm feeling particularly blessed right now...blessed AND happy. Happily blessed.

I am thankful for (in no particular order)...

Not having a "taboo Christmas music" rule. Birds that aren't scared to sing out. Having "spare" time. Fluffy blankets. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Italy and everything therein. Laughter. When reality is sweeter than my dreams. Having a clean room. The Plan of Happiness. Regal bald eagles. My wonderful, patient, encouraging and loving family. The brave men and women who are now or ever have served our country. Education. Being a woman. Disney & Pixar. Faithful missionaries. My hands. Patient parents. Memories. Home videos. Cold water to drink and hot water to shower in. Winter clothing. Good books. Teddy Grahams. The brilliance of Apple's products. Strong and exemplary friends. Honorable young men. Mini Coopers. Patience. The rejuvenation of a good nights sleep. Good music. Freedom. Shampoo & Conditioner. Old people. The satisfaction of working hard and accomplishing goals. Orange nail polish. Technology. The gifts I've been given and the joy of sharing them. Health and the motivation to maintain it. Smiles. The scriptures. The loving sisterhood of women. Whoever discovered the decadence of putting coconut in desserts. U32. My GD friends who aren't nit-picking about all the rivers running through this fully justified paragraph. Cheesecake. Butterflies inside and outside of my tummy. The miracle of the human body. Being the youngest. Love. Rocking chairs. Doctors. My favorite kids on the planet - The N&Ns. Flirting. Experiences, good or bad, that have made me who I am today. Any excuse to get together with my family. Poetry. The combination of creative minds and hard workers. Reading old journal entries and laughing at myself. Having hair, despite its unwillingness to grow quickly. The Miracle Drug - Ibuprofen. The holiday season. The many beautiful temples. The majesty of the stars in the sky. My SLR. My institute teacher, Brother Hardy. Just thinking to myself. The fact that I will never run out of things to be thankful for.

What are you thankful for?

I now deem it fitting to thank YOU.
You know who you are.
You know what you've done.

Thanks for being my friends, whether virtually or literally.
I just heart yer faces, hope ya know.

I Like Yous Guys

This week I received (drum roll, please) my very first blog award.

It may not be an Academy Award or mundo prestigious, but it sure means a lot to know that someone out there, a sweet friend in the vast blogosphere, appreciates what I write and maybe even connects a little bit every once in a while.

That is my favorite part about blogging and reading/commenting (hint hint) on blogs: Connecting with people that I wouldn't have ever met otherwise and taking a walk in someone else's shoes. Some of the most fun friendships I have were born RIGHT HERE and I think that is all rather fabulous!

Thank you, Miss Catherine for the award :)

Tribute to My Neighbor

I don't know what made me think to look up Mr. Roger's Neighborhood on YouTube just now, but when I did I felt like a child again. Suddenly, it was just like those mornings when all of my siblings would leave for school and I'd sit down to the table with my peanut butter & honey sandwich cut into triangles and joyfully glean from the abundant goodness of the man beaming at me from the tv screen.

Truly, he is one of the most genuinely good men the world has ever known.
And so, here is my blog tribute to our neighbor, Mr. Rogers:

Someday I hope to shake his hand in heaven
...or give him a hug rather.

Thank you, Mr. Rogers for reminding us all how truly special we are.

My 3rd Eye - Day 5: Tickling The Keys

Playing the piano has become a stress reliever for me these past 4 years or so.

So, I play it every single day and love it much more now than I did when I took lessons as a child. :) This picture looks trickier than it actually was - camera in lap on self timer as I played "For Good" from Wicked. Gotta love all the fun and unique strategies of photography, eh?

And I'd like to give a shout out to each of you, my lovely/handsome followers!

My new friend Chess makes #50!
Wow, guys & gals, thanks for lovin'!

PPP Tips of the Week - Part IV

PPP is BACK!

What is PPP?

I won’t attempt to relay to you ALL of the ebbs and flows of my "health routine" these past 2 months, but to paraphrase I will quote my new favorite running song by Aly & AJ,

"like a roller-coaster ride, up and down and side to side...like whoa!"

Perhaps your healthy endeavors have been somewhat the same way?

Well I say, HAVE NO FEAR - PPP IS HERE! Time to get motivated and get moving!

I'll start off this week's tips by sharing the ones that you sent for the book giveaway and I'll contribute my two-cents as well:

Tip #1 - Your favorite nutritious recipe (snack or meal):

For Breakfast: Greek Yogurt Parfait (from Jillian Michaels book)

All you need is a half a cup of Greek Yogurt, bran or whole wheat cereal of your choice, favorite berries (strawberries, blueberries), several orange slices and a drizzle (about a Tbsp) of honey over the top. YUM!

For Lunch: Turkey Hummus Wrap

Spread hummus (instead of mayo, Miracle Whip or mustard) on a whole wheat tortilla – top with avacado, romaine lettuce or spinach, tomato, lean turkey meat, and a little of your favorite cheese (I like provolone). Delicious, nutritious and filling!

For Dinner: Anything Salad

Start with a base of romaine lettuce, Spring Mix (arugula & several other leafy greens), and spinach. From there is where the fun begins – Add any of your favorite vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds or legumes to blend with your salad. I usually add cherry tomatoes, black beans, pea pods, sliced carrots, sunflower seeds, and a little bit of crumbled Feta cheese. For dressing - Find a vinaigrette that you enjoy or a lite dressing. To avoid using TOO MUCH dressing, build your salad in a bowl or Tupperware that has a lid so you can shake it after pouring on 1 serving of dressing and have it evenly distributed and coating (not dripping from) each healthy, crunchy bite.

Leon said – “To be honest, steamed broccoli has got to be my favorite. Take some broccoli, and steam it. Maybe put a little pepper or (if you can afford the calories) cheese :)”

Travis said – “My favorite recipe is the salad bar at Jason's deli.”

Jessica said – “I LOVE to eat Salmon. Absolutely fabulous :) (thank you, Costco!) And do you realize how good it is for you? Yeah... like I said: FABULOUS! And I usually have it with either asparagus, broccoli, or green beans which have been cooked in a frying pan with just a bit of olive oil and sea salt. Oh. And rice. Brown is good. Or the new grain my family discovered called Quinoa. I think it may be my new favorite.

If it's snack time, I'll take dried berries and unsalted almonds. Very sustaining. You get sweet, tart, crunchy, chewy and protein at once! Not to mention that I just love almonds.”

Emilee said – “Nothing to fancy but I love my bowl of oatmeal in the morning with fresh blueberries, yum!”

Catherine said – “I love avocados. They are a great source of fiber, antioxidants, and potassium. I love having them just plain, adding them to a salad, or mashing them up into guacamole for chips or substituting for condiments on burgers...yum!”

Audrie said – “Well, I love a lot of things. But probably one of my favorites is this:

Fresh Fruit Smoothie

2 8-oz cartons of Non-Fat Vanilla Yogurt (I actually use any kind of yogurt)

2 Ripe Small Bananas

1 Cup Sliced Fresh Strawberries (You can do frozen, too)

1 Cup Fresh Mixed Berries (i.e. raspberries, blueberries, and/or blackberries ((whatever you like)) or unsweetened frozen mixed berries)

5-6 Whole or Crushed Ice Cubes

Mix in a blender until smooth.

Makes 4 servings.

Also, to go along with that, I just get a bowl of granola (sorry, I don't have the recipe... I can find it for you if you want!) and milk or mix it with the smoothie.

A delicious and nutritious breakfast!”

Tip #2 – Your favorite way to exercise and why:

Recently I’ve been tearing it up in classes taught by my local Recreation Center. I’ve become addicted to the cycling, step and cardio toning classes! I find that when I can’t muster up the strength to run myself around a track or get on an elliptical, if I just get myself to the gym I can then rely on the teacher. They always get me pushing myself in no time.

Leon said – “Swimming. It's kind of like tithing in a way because everyone gets a proportional workout no matter how in shape they are. Plus, I have webbed toes, so I feel like I just belong in water.”

Travis said – “The best way to exercise is with a partner, they help keep you motivated and honest.”

Jessica said – “DANCING! That's how I grew up. It's not even exercise in my mind. Or basically anything with friends. Or whatever I happen to be in the mood for that day (bike, swim, run, elliptical, etc. NO to the treadmill and only minimal street running).”

Emilee said – “I love running but recently I bought Jillian Michael's No more trouble zones exercise DVD and it is awesome!”

Catherine said – “I love going to the Fieldhouse on campus (free student memberships are great things to take advantage of!) and doing some cardio...usually running or elliptical...for at least 30 minutes every week day. Being surrounded by other people working out motivates me to do better and work harder than I would if I was alone.”

Audrie said – “In the summer I join a Swimming Team and do that. But each day I usually do yoga and strength stretches and exercises. I do that every day and then switch off from either biking or running. It helps me with strength, flexibility, and core.”

Tip #3 – Your motivation to get fit and stay healthy:

Health = Happiness. I have never been so miserable as I am when I sit around like a couch potato, eating junk and watching TV all day. The next thing I know my pants are a bit too tight and I feel like junk – “you are what you eat” was never truer. Ah, but when I’m consistently exercising and eating healthy my body is the first to notice. Getting out of the house (especially in this beautiful weather) and staying busy with a fun and active lifestyle is what life is all about! Eat to live, don't live to eat. I never want my ability to enjoy life to be limited by poor health…and so, it never will. It’s as simple as a choice!

Leon said – “Skinny jeans and, like you said in the post, it just feels good! I used to get sick all the time, but when I take care of myself by staying healthy, I feel about 1.3 million times better and rarely (if ever) get sick.”

Travis said – “I'm not getting any younger.”

Jessica said – “I just like to feel good! (and look good) and I don't want to ever have to give up activities I love because of health issues related to weight gain. And when it comes to eating... fresh foods just taste so much better and are so much better for you! I mean, c'mon, does anyone plan on living off ramen for their whole lives like they did in school? Yeah...that was never and will never be me. I like to cook :)”

Emilee said – “My motivation is my family. I want my kids to learn how to be healthy by staying active and eating nutritious food.”

Catherine said – “I think it is important to take care of and cultivate the gifts your Father in Heaven has given you, especially your body. It is an amazing machine that houses your spirit and without great physical health, your spiritual, mental and emotional health do suffer.”

Audrie said – “This is actually kind of neat…I had decided to…create a fitness program and start a healthful diet. That VERY day, I looked onto your blog and you had started the Pinky Promise Project! I don't know, that just hit me. I appreciate you helping me with that. Well, my mom has also started with that too, and she helps me get motivated.”

HOORAY for Sharing The Health! Thank you all ever so much! :)
